Do You Have the Right Stuff to Be a Filmmaker?
Given the availability of inexpensive "point and shoot" cameras and easy to use editing systems, the idea of making a movie seems relatively simple. Right? Well, perhaps not. On paper it looks straightforward, but doing it is another story. Ask any film student who has made a short movie. The truth is, equipment is only a small part of the job. Filmmaking is a complex process, involving at least six different skill sets. To do it right, you must understanding the basics of:
Weakness in any of these areas will show up in your final movie, assuming that you can even finish it. This is true for all types of film projects: short or feature, documentary or narrative, TV or theatrical. Here is a free eBook that goes into more detail about the different aspects of filmmaking. It is a PDF, click for immediate download: Historically, the best filmmakers have had a strong understanding of all the craft areas. Filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Quentin Tarantino, use not only directing skills, but lighting, sound, editing, and of course screenwriting to move audiences. By having a firm understanding of the different core areas of filmmaking, you will be able to recognize creative opportunities when they arise and know what is possible and what isn't. From a producing point of view, you will be able to get "the biggest bang for the buck," putting every penny on screen. Without this knowledge you will be at the mercy of others or, worst, winging it. If you have no desire to attend a traditional film school, Film School Online courses may be the answer in helping you gain this knowledge. Designed by Lou LaVolpe, NYU Film School's Production Supervisor of twenty years, the program is composed of hundreds of easy to follow lessons using a Moodle/Blackboard approach. They are organized in six core courses, as above. There is also a bonus course on the creative process and how to unleash it in yourself. Check out the sample lessons below to see if you might be interested in this home study approach. They are in PDF format so that you can save them for future reference (the actual courses are entirely online). We hope that they are helpful: Cinematography Lighting Basics
